In a year that has been filled with life-changing events for every single person on the planet, it seems crazy that we would want to take time to give thanks.
However, giving thanks and living with a thankful heart is just what we need to do to combat all of the negative things that have happened in our lives. Even though November is the traditional time we set aside to give thanks, it’s even more important we give thanks this year.
As I looked up verses about living with a thankful heart, I discovered some interesting things about thanksgiving. Three passages in Colossians stood out to me as I sought to learn how to live with a thankful heart.
So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude. Colossians 2:6-7
Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. Colossians 3:14-15
Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2
Did you notice the characteristics of a thankful heart that were shared in these verses? They are being rooted in Jesus, established in the faith, loving, unified, peaceful, and prayerful.
I have never noticed that these characteristics were associated with thanksgiving, have you?
When I made this connection, I immediately realized living with a thankful heart boils down to living out our faith. When we are rooted in Jesus and are loving, unified, peaceful, and prayerful, we will always have reasons to be thankful.
